Doors to a Wider Place

This book contains six short stories, all which are set in Australia. If I have enough knowledge about Australian history, culture and discrimination against Australia's Aboriginal people, I would have been able to get a better understanding of the authors true points. Reader should study about Australia before read this book.

In the six stories, I like first one. It tells the story of a boy, who was depressed over his bird's death, and whistling kettle. The kettle came to the boy instead of the bird which had been kept by the boy. His delight, which was derived from getting whistling kettle, and purity made me feel warm inside.

The Great Gatsby

I can not understand that the novel is ranked 2nd in terms of "Modern Library 100 Best Novels".

The story depicts the ordinary aspects of the Gatsby's life and his communication with people surrounding him. Gatsby is a man who is upstart, sad, yearning for love, lonely and be killed by an undue resentment.

I wanted to read the novel, because I knew the novel contain a lot of luxuriant English expressions. However, I could not find any luxuriance in the book. This shows that my reading comprehension ability must be improved! High reading ability would make the story more attractive.

I'd like to read this novel again someday.

Grown ups' Christmas party at Luna

Barely time to catch our breath after the children's party this afternoon, before we welcomed our bigger friends and students to the school for our end-of-year/Christmas party. Last year's BYO format was really successful, so why change a winning format?!

It never ceases to amaze me that in Japan, "start at 7pm" means you can expect everyone to arrive at 7pm on the dot...and so they did tonight. A lot of familiar faces, some bravely coming for the first time and making new friends. Eleanor stole a few hearts, and Jim went quiet for the first time all day.

Unlike last year, we put on a couple of events which got people working together less self-consciously. Tana's quiz was hard - "What do Turkmenistani people do at Xmas?". The winning team scored about 40% - and this was multiple choice!

The "Who am I" activity worked well - Taro Aso won. However, some very long faces due to the fact that Bugs Bunny was apparently a woman, Nelson Mandela and Winnie the Pooh American. Jun didn't know too much about reggae, and Ineko couldn't remember John Lennon's name. Oh well!

Frank Sinatra also featured, as we broke into some unusual karaoke to the tune "I love New York in June". Two teams had to organise the lyrics first, then put a dance together and sing along. Hilarious efforts from both teams and a lot of fun, before attention returned to finishing off the buffet.

Lots of happy faces, new friends made, promises to come and party some more with us in 2009. Wishing everyone a super Christmas - few more classes yet before we can relax properly though!

Cheers
!

Love in the Lake

"Love in the lake" is complete love story. It's fun and I have finish the book in one sitting.
I've written some paragraphs explaining how Rovert's and Laura's lives change after the end of the story.

The title is "To coexist with tourists"
The area has some problems regarding the tourists who visit at the Lake District and do water sports. Many of them are bad-mannered, for example, litter the lake with garbage, ride a jet-ski with alcohol. However, they spend lots of money in the area. People, who live around the Lake District, want to find a way to get rid of bad-mannered tourist and to coexist peacefully with the other good tourists.
Robert and Laura began activities to solve the problem. Robert vets near the Lake District and he lost his friend in the jet-ski accident. He has been calling for local government to regulate the jet-skiing. Laure is one of the people who was fascinated by peaceful lake and good food in the area. She runs a food shop and café in London, and her shop plays a role of antenna shop of the area of Lake District. Reentry, their patient effort is producing the little effects. The local government has begun steps toward to regulate jet-skiing, and there is an increasing number of people who visit there for natural food, not for jet-skiing. If the activities are successful, it will lead to the revitalization of the other local city or country town.
