English language school in the heart of the Japanese Alps, and English language learners sharing their experiences online. Teachers post regular items about teaching, learning tools, events in the school, their day to day experiences living & working in a foreign country. Students post on whatever takes their fancy - book reports, festivals in home towns, postcards from business trips etc. A little Brit of England in the guts of Japan!

Horrible Halloween - what can a monster do?
Kotone's crazy creature's |
Now I do realize I’m
a little late to the party with a Halloween post, but this is what happens if
you rely on 10 year olds to get their homework done and handed in on time!
We have been learning
to use “can” and “can’t” for abilities recently, so I thought it would be
interesting to combine these abilities with some spooky creatures. We started
by sharing our own ideas on what a monster/vampire/ghost etc can or can’t do: “Can
a bat drive a car?”, “No it can’t!!” Don't be daft Damian.
Moeka's mysterious mummies |
We then set about putting
our ideas down on paper. We did this by drawing a park scene which depicted Halloween creatures playing/having a picnic together; incorporating the various
actions and abilities we had covered in lesson. Everyone did an excellent job
showing what each creature can or can’t do, and we followed this up by writing sentences
to describe our pictures on handwriting paper. Eventually we managed to arrive
at the finished product and had a bit of show and tell session to show off our
work, just in time for… Well classroom decorations for next Halloween I guess.

Are iPad good or bad
Many people are against iPads, but I think they are good thing. Some people say that we play too much with iPads.
Today lots of people wear glasses because they play too much with iPads. In addition, some apps cost extra money and some people spend a lot of time playing with them so they become fat and unhealthy
I don't agree. I think that iPads are a good thing, because you can communicate with people around the world. Also, you can play with games, watch videos and use as a mini PC.
So some people think that iPads are a bad thing. But I think they are a great way to have fun and learn.

My role model Lionel Messi
Lionel Messi of Barcelona against Osasuna. (Photo credit: Wikipedia) |
Messi scores a lot of goals and has won lots of trophies like six La Ligas, two Copas del Rey, six Supercopas de España, three UEFA Champions Leagues, two UEFA Super Cups and two Club World Cup (wikipedia). He has won the Ballon d'Or and FIFA world player of the year.
Messi lives in Spain ( Barcelona ) but he is very famous and recognized everywhere. He has established a charity called Leo Messi Foundation to help kids. He earns $65 million a year, but I like him because hes really good at football.

Rui's trip back to London
I went to London 2 Fridays ago. We flew from Haneda to London. It took 11 hours on ANA. We had Paella for dinner. I saw Captain America , Hunger Games and more.
We stayed in Hilton near the airport for 1 night, then we went to an apartment near my old school. After that my mum went to see her old friend and me, my dad and my brother went to shopping in Brent Cross. We bought books, a school uniform for my school.

We went to Harrods for some shopping but it was so so so boring ! Nandos was better. English food is rubbish compared to Japanese.
I want to come back to London soon because my best friend is there. I enjoyed my trip a lot !

A day to remember - trip to see Matilda
Matilda (Photo credit: Wikipedia) |
After school, Misha's mum picked me up in her car and we drove to the station. When we arrived at the station, we got on the train and went to the musical. When we arrived, first we had dinner, it was pizza and pasta. After that we went to the musical.
Matilda was very funny and it was very good story. The musical finished about 11 o'clock. We went to the shop and buyed some gift. After that we went home. I will never forget.

Acting out not acting up - working together through role playing
For our next instalment of "Luna's got Talent" I would like to introduce Rui, Kaito, Kotone and Moeka acting out the story of Max and Digger from Review 2 of English Time 1 (written by Susan Rivers and Setsuko Toyama). In this story Max gets a little too greedy and gets a stomach ache!
During rehearsals the boys were much more focused on creating the most extravagant and eccentric foods and drinks from the props they had available, while the girls focused more on learning their lines. As you can see from the performances the boys tended to forget their lines! Luckily for the boys the girls were on hand to prompt them when they did. It was great fun getting the students to play the role of director and calling out stage directions when it came to the performances, it's always fantastic to see your students working together to create something they can all be proud of. A great way to build on conversational language whilst having tons of fun.

Self-portraits on Tuesday
I have found a cool app (multi lens) which I managed to find a use for yesterday!
We are about to start a new book, and I figured we could personalise our inside covers as well as remember how to spell our names. I always think it is nice to showcase the children's work anyway, as regular readers will know. It is also cool to look back sometimes and reflect - that was me?!
Looking forward to Magic Time!
