My Junior High School boys class can be a bit of a handful at times, can it can be tough keeping them motivated and engaged especially last thing on a Friday evening!

English Time 3 offers an opportunity to use CLIL, which these boys lapped up at the end of U9. The project - making a treasure map, with a dexcription using language we had studied in previous units. A chance to let the creative juices flow and be a bit crazy and bizarre.

Horrible Halloween - what can a monster do?

Now I do realize I’m a little late to the party with a Halloween post, but this is what happens if you rely on 10 year olds to get their homework done and handed in on time!

We have been learning to use “can” and “can’t” for abilities recently, so I thought it would be interesting to combine these abilities with some spooky creatures. We started by sharing our own ideas on what a monster/vampire/ghost etc can or can’t do: “Can a bat drive a car?”, “No it can’t!!” Don't be daft Damian.

We then set about putting our ideas down on paper. We did this by drawing a park scene which depicted Halloween creatures playing/having a picnic together; incorporating the various actions and abilities we had covered in lesson. Everyone did an excellent job showing what each creature can or can’t do, and we followed this up by writing sentences to describe our pictures on handwriting paper. Eventually we managed to arrive at the finished product and had a bit of show and tell session to show off our work, just in time for… Well classroom decorations for next Halloween I guess.

Acting out not acting up - working together through role playing

For our next instalment of "Luna's got Talent" I would like to introduce Rui, Kaito, Kotone and Moeka acting out the story of Max and Digger from Review 2 of English Time 1 (written by Susan Rivers and Setsuko Toyama). In this story Max gets a little too greedy and gets a stomach ache!

During rehearsals the boys were much more focused on creating the most extravagant and eccentric foods and drinks from the props they had available, while the girls focused more on learning their lines. As you can see from the performances the boys tended to forget their lines! Luckily for the boys the girls were on hand to prompt them when they did. It was great fun getting the students to play the role of director and calling out stage directions when it came to the performances, it's always fantastic to see your students working together to create something they can all be proud of. A great way to build on conversational language whilst having tons of fun.
