Cambridge First lads succeed at Luna - Can Do!

Congratulations from Damian
A proud Wednesday evening recently as Damian and Jim were both able to hand over Cambridge First (FCE) certificates to successful students, who have worked very hard to achieve this very credible benchmark.

FCE is not the kind of exam you can just stroll along to and get lucky with; you need to prepare carefully and understand the nature of the tasks required of you. Listening is not a matter of connecting the dots or remembering a telephone number...the writing paper is seriously hard & comes with considerable time pressure - an essay? a report? an article? Reading requires mental dexterity, a sound grasp of unfamiliar vocabulary, and ability to process quickly without panicking/getting bogged down. There's a lot of heavy duty grammar to control as well.

Damian & Jim both know these two lads can cope with the speaking part of the test...both of them could talk the hind leg off a donkey!

And a well done from Jim

Smart phones - in my opinion

Almost everybody has a smart phone, but is it a good invention? I think there are both advantages and disadvantages to them.

The first advantage is that we can keep in touch with our friends, for example using SNS, sending text messages or sharing pictures. There are plenty of ways to communicate, and what’s more, we can do it easily with our fingers at any time. Secondly, we can listen to music anywhere. As the mobile phones are very light these days, it is useful to carry them around, so we can enjoy our favourite music on the go and without disturbing others. Thirdly, they sometimes can be our lifeline because we can get an alarm before an earthquake happens. It is well known because of this alarm, many peoples’ lives will be saved by escaping safely, without getting in a panic. Also, in my country Japan, there are many earthquakes every year so this alarm is really helpful.

As for disadvantages, I will give you three. Firstly, we modern people waste our time using them, for instance playing games, watching videos or searching gossip. Of course, it is nice to use them in our pastimes, but I think many people are using them even when they haven’t finished tasks like homework. Secondly, it is bad for our health. Using them causes stiff shoulders and also our eyes get damaged especially in dark situations. It is said that the blue light from mobile phone screens cause injuries to our eyes. Thirdly, sometimes people get bullied by SNS. Being talked about , having a photo shared online which we didn’t wanted to, body-shaming. Nowadays it is getting a serious problem.

In  conclusion, although it is dangerous if we use smart phones too much, I think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, especially if we add improved media literacy and free access to information. The smart phone is a wonderful invention.

Whitechapel - review of Episode One

The TV series is about an ambitious police officer investigating a murder case. It is set in Whitechapel in 2008.

The story starts with a murder scene. A man with a funny hat brutally killed a lady. A young police officer, who wants to be promoted, is in charge of this crime. However, he has never worked in the field, so he clashed with the cops who usually do. Back to the incident, the victim's name is Cathy and she is married to Bob, a butcher, who is suspected by the cops. However, he had a cast-iron alibi that he had already been arrested at the time of the murder. He couldn't be the killer. Moreover, the incident is extremely similar to the crime which Jack the Ripper committed exactly 120 years before.

What's similar? Of course the gender, the way of killing, the place, and even the date & time! In the last scene, the cops knew the crime was a copycat criminal.

I only watched the first part, so I don't know what the story be like, but I'm really curious about it. If I have an opportunity I'd like to watch the next episode.

Kimi no na wa (Your Name) - a film review

'Your Name' is a film that you must see. It was directed by Matoko Shinkai, a popular animation
movie director. It stars no one because it is an animation film. This film should win the Japanese Academy Prize for Best Animation film.

This contemporary film is set in Tokyo and Hide-Takeyama, in rural Gifu.

The film is about two high school students, a boy called Taki and a girl called Mitsuha. They had never met each other, but they started to reverse roles in their dreams. They come to know each other, and one day Taki decides to see her, but she wasn't there...

I totally recommend 'Your Name'. The animation is spectacular and it makes you laugh a lot. The story is a bit complicated, thus I would recommend you watch it twice. The soundtrack was made by a Japanese popular rock band 'Radwimps', and it is captivating.

If you were going to Paris, what 5 things would you pack? Why?

The first thing I must buy is a phrase book. It will help me communicate with French people. Of course, I will need a raincoat because I don't know when it rains and it is more compact than an umbrella. However, the weather conditions can be mixed, so tp protect my head I have to bring a hat. Insect bites can be painful, so I have to buy several tubes of bug cream. Last, but not least,, never forget to include sneakers, because I will be walking around the city a lot. Yuya

How to make a delicious cake!

First, cut the sponge in half.
Then cut a hole in the middle of the top piece.
Spread the cream with a spatula on the bottom sponge.
Put peach slices on the cream.
Next put the top sponge on the bottom sponge.
Cut the middle piece in half and cover the bottom sponge.
Fill the hole with cream and strawberries. In the middle you put the biggest strawberry.
Spread the cream with the spatula again on the side and on the top.
Then comes the secret part.
Cut the slice peach in quarter and put around the edge on the top.
Then cover the peach with the cream :)
Put strawberries around the hole.

Hybrid animals - from Luna's laboratory

As I was away last Friday - travelling to the Great Northern Island - Tana covered my imaginative returnee class (thank you!)

This is what they came up with, after thinking about Hybrid animals - which one is the best? Please vote by leaving a comment below.

The one top right looks a bit like a famous mouse; the one bottom left I am sure I have seen before in a kaiten sushi restaurant. Good job all round.

See ya Friday!

Dear Ms. Tana

How are you? I'm now in Hawaii.

There's a very famous mountain called Diamond Head.
We climbed it and saw the sunset.
I love Hawaii.
