Grace Darling - difficult choices

I read Grace Darling in June, and here is my answer to After Reading #4.

If I have to choose four people, I would save…

A mother and her young child, because young child is not physically strong to spend long time in the ocean.
A doctor (older woman), because she is able to take care of the sick people after she goes to the lighthouse.
A nurse (young man), because I need someone to row my boat together. He would be able to row back to save other people.
A teacher (older woman), because older woman is not physically strong enough comparing to man or young woman.

I imagined it was very difficult to made the right decision in the limited time frame. But William and Grace were really brave and able to save as many people as they could.

I was really impressed by the Grace’s word, “Think of those poor people, alone on that rock. We live on a lighthouse – it’s our job!”. I am working at a company, but I want to think about what I can do for the people as a job.

Grace Darling - alternative titles

Here are some different titles for the story. Which ones are good, which ones are not good? Can you say why?
  • Grace & William Darling: It is not good because it is utterly boring.
  • The Angel from the Lighthouse: This title is very catchy because Grace Darling is really like an angel.
  • The Captain who didn't go back: The main story isn't about the captain (of the Forfarshire).
The end of the Forfarshire: I think it is great because it tells us what the story is about.
  • Heroine: I think that it is good because Grace is an heroine.
  • Shipwreck: I think it is fine because it is short but it tells us about the story.
  • A stormy night: It is not so good because it is really boring.
  • Harker's Rock: It is not about Harker's Rock.
I really liked it because the story was exciting. I want to be strong and brave like Grace.

Grace Darling

1. Thomasin Darling wrote a letter to her son William, telling him about the stormy night. Can you find and correct the twelve mistakes in it?

The Light house, Longstone Island

Dear William
I have so much to tell you! We have had a terrible storm here. It lasted for seventy-two hours, and the waves were more than twenty metres high!

A ship called the Forfarshire was wrecked on the rocks. It was a big ship and it broke into two pieces. Some of the passengers climbed onto Harker's Rock.

Grace was the first person to see the shipwreck and the passengers waiving on the rock. Your father and Grace then got the boat out and rowed to the rock, but only five people could get in our little boat. The passengers helped to row the boat back, and then your father and two other men went to the rock a second time and saved four more passengers.

Your sister Grace is now a famous heroine, and the Queen is writing to thank her - it's in all the newspapers!

Come home soon.
Love from Mother

I think that the story is like as Titanic.
However the story is less famous than Titanic, because it is not Love story.

Grace Darling

This is the true story of Grace Darling a girl who became a famous heroine in Scotland. This story is described by two scene.
One scene is a passenger's point of view on the Forfarshire. Forfarshire is called a good modern steamship and strong by people, but their engine was too old. Another scene is a young woman's point of view. She works in a lighthouse with her family.

The Forfarshire journeys from Hull to Dundee in Scotland. It came across storm and ship engines was stopped. Then it crashed into rocks and was shipwrecked near coast. there was lighthouse near that Grace Darling works in.
This is the lighthouse where Grace Darling and...
And Grace Darling found ship's passengers on rocks. Then she decided to help courageously.
Two scene become one finally. This story is suspensive and interesting.
