Changing their skies

Changing their skies

Before I read this book, I almost have never imagined the situation of poverty of African people.
The book has 3 individual stories which are written through the children who live in Africa.
"The Rubbish Dump" "Cardboard Mansions" "Leaving" in these 3 stories, especially second story "Cardboard Mansions" made me remind strongly.
Because I felt hopeless serious situation in Africa from the story.

Although old woman Dadi-Ma and her only grandchild Chotoo (whom house is just made of "Cardboard")tried to escape their poverty situation, after their long trip, eventually they understood their hope had already crashed.
I cant forget the last page. the old woman Dadi-Ma was too tired and too old to reply to Chotoo in order to understand their hopeless situation.
Then young Chotoo (he is 5 years old)began to understand his own hopeless situation which he could not depend on her and might lose her support in near future..

This story left the strong impression for me on vacation.

  1. Atsu,

This book obviously had quite an effect on you. Do you think Japanese kids should learn about things like this? I often feel JHS children here go through life in a vacuum devoid of external input.
